KARL leadership program opens applications for upcoming class
Application deadline is April 1; Class XVIII to be announced in June

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas Agriculture and Rural Leadership (KARL) program is now accepting applications for Class XVIII, which will begin in August, 2026.
Applications are available online at karlprogram.com/apply-nominate and will be accepted through April 1.
Now in its 35th year, KARL provides in-depth leadership development for individuals committed to agriculture, rural communities and the future of Kansas. Through in-state seminars, national study tours and an international experience, participants complete more than 400 hours of training over two years.
“KARL is about developing leaders who understand both the local realities of rural Kansas and the broader forces shaping agriculture and rural economies,” said KARL President Jill Zimmerman. “Strong local leadership is essential to resilient communities, thriving agriculture businesses and a competitive Kansas economy.”
The program is designed for professionals across agriculture and agribusiness, rural education, health care, finance and community organizations who want to deepen their leadership capacity, strengthen their decision-making skills and expand their understanding of public policy, rural community issues and global agriculture.
KARL graduates join a statewide alumni network of more than 450 leaders who serve in government, local and state boards, farm and commodity organizations, agribusinesses, nonprofits and community leadership roles.
“Participants gain practical tools to lead where they live and work,” Zimmerman said. “They also build lasting relationships that support collaboration across sectors and regions of the state.”
Following the application deadline, finalists will be interviewed by a selection committee in late April. Approximately 30 associates will be selected and announced as Class XVIII at the “KARL Big Event” celebration in Manhattan on Saturday, June 6.
KARL is a member of the International Association of Programs for Agricultural Leaders (IAPAL), which includes leadership programs in more than 40 states and several countries.
