Extension Publications: A Look at Where We're Headed

By Erin Martinez, Interim Associate Director of Extension Programs

Along with that change comes an exciting opportunity to reimagine how we develop, deliver and maintain extension publications.

Let me be clear about a few things right away: the bookstore is not going away, and Extension publications remain one of the many ways we serve Kansans. That is not up for debate.

What is evolving is how we do the work behind them.

A Preliminary Vision

While nothing has been finalized yet, here’s a look at the direction this work is heading.

The preliminary vision for extension publications centers on four core commitments:

  • Quality and integrity. A standardized peer review process for all publications, so Kansans can continue to trust that what we produce is accurate, vetted and research-based.
  • Efficiency and timeliness. Streamlined, automated workflows that get information into the hands of people who need it, when they need it.
  • Brand consistency and accessibility. Publication templates that take the guesswork out of graphic design and layout, while ensuring every piece we produce meets accessibility standards and is built with the reader in mind.
  • Reader impact. Everything we create should serve a purpose and reach the people it's meant for. If it doesn't move the needle for our constituents, we should ask why.

What’s Next

It is natural to ask: what's the timeline, what happens from here, and what will this look like for my work? Those are fair questions, and while a fully defined roadmap isn't yet in place, here is what we know right now.

The most immediate and critical next step is conducting a search for an extension publications manager. This role will report directly to the Associate Director for Extension Programs and will be central to bringing this preliminary vision to life. It is anticipated that the search committee will be formed and the position will be posted within the month. Much of the finer detail and longer-term timeline will take shape once the right person is in place.

In the meantime, work is already underway. A standardized peer review process is being drafted and will be reviewed and refined by an ad hoc task force. We are also learning from peer land-grant universities and colleagues at the Extension Foundation to ensure we are building something effective, efficient, and appropriate for our system.

Your Voice Matters in This Process

This is still very much a work in progress. The best version of this system will be built with input from the people who use and create these publications every day.
