Elevating Extension: In the Middle of the Whirlwind
July 7, 2026

Summer has a way of turning into a blur — fairs, programs, camps, community events and everything else life asks of you, all landing at once, and sometimes in 100 degree heat. This is the season when it's easiest to feel buried and to let the important things slide in favor of just getting through the week.
During busy seasons like this, it's worth taking a moment to remember why we're here: to improve the lives, livelihoods and communities of Kansans. That mission remains at the center of everything we do, no matter how full our calendars become.
We fulfill that mission by consistently focusing on four essential parts of our work:
- Seeking to understand the needs of individuals, families, and communities.
- Designing and delivering programs that address those needs.
- Evaluating our efforts to understand what worked, what didn't, and how we can improve.
- Reporting our outcomes in ways that clearly demonstrate our impact.
Those four things aren't just a checklist — they're the foundation of great extension work. But it's usually the last two, evaluation and reporting, that slip into "I'll do it next time" or "I'll save this for later" when summer gets busy.
The reality is: next time is too late, and later doesn't always come.
As you navigate the busy weeks ahead, protect time to evaluate your programs while they're still fresh and to document the impacts you've helped create. Your work is changing lives across Kansas, and those stories deserve to be told.
The programs you deliver matter. The relationships you build matter. And the impact you create matters. Taking the time to capture and communicate that impact isn't separate from the work – it is an essential part of fulfilling our mission.
