Elevating Extension: Finding Reasons to Smile
Sept. 15, 2026

We have spent a lot of time talking about performance reviews, reporting, deadlines, systems and processes. Those things are important, but they can also make us lose sight of why we do this work in the first place. I often need the reminder as much as any of you.
As summer winds down and fall begins to take shape, I've been reflecting a little more than usual. A recent family wedding and a different experience at the Kansas State Fair reminded me how quickly seasons change.
For years, fair season meant standing ringside, cheering on my own kids. This year, I helped where needed and cheered for families and youth I've come to know through K-State Extension. That different perspective reinforced something I've always known: Relationships matter.
One of the things I enjoy most about this profession is coaching others, helping people learn, celebrating successes and working through challenges together. We are fortunate to be surrounded by people who care about their communities and each other, and K-State Extension is full of them.
I have also been thinking about colleagues who recently retired or are preparing for that next chapter. Their careers are a reminder that programs, priorities and organizational structures will change, but the relationships we build endure. Their impact lives on through the people they mentored, the communities they served and the colleagues (like me!) who had the privilege of learning from them.
As we head into fall, I encourage you to think about what gave you a reason to smile this year. This would also be a good topic for one of your many Success Stories as you work on that performance review this week.
Maybe it was a young person who found confidence, or a volunteer who stepped up, a successful fair, a new partnership, a grateful client, or a conversation that reminded you that your work matters.
Please take time to celebrate those moments. Give a teammate a high five. Send a note of appreciation. Thank an office professional. Recognize someone who quietly makes your team better. Share a little Purple Pride.
There will always be challenges ahead, but when I look across K-State Extension, I see talented, caring people who continue to show up, support one another and make a difference every day.
Thank you for giving me reasons to smile.
